["You should have used your contacts", says a sing-song voice in his head sounding suspiciously like his little sister as he ends up staring in the face of his worst nightmare, really. It was stupidly optimistic of him to think-- yeah. Why would it be any different here, after all? He's a freak, so he's going to be treated like such.]

[He's flinching back, too, thinking that he's seeing the same kind of fear and disgust the people in his town regard him with, and his tone is a strange mix of reassuring, to put her at ease, to make her see he's nothing to fear, this is just how he looks; and disappointed coldness because he can try, has tried, but it's not going to work this time, either, is it?]


I'm a living human, just like you. [He can't help the flat stare that accompanies the words.] This is just how I look.

[How he looks, now, and it's no use pretending anything different. That's just lying to himself. And no, he's definitely not starting to explain his life story and the illness and subsequent "syndrome" he was diagnosed with to a stranger he's just met.]
