☯ 1. The barrier has fallen and the entirety of the Avatar world is open for exploration. If you're going to the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom or any of the Air Temples, you might have a few days to travel. Stuck on a boat, airship or flying bison; yeesh! Those headed to the Fire Nation have the option of taking an ominous-looking portal located on Air Temple Island which will zip them straight there! No matter the destination, the population of each nation seems a little... thinned out.
☯ 2. Do you have an OU counterpart somewhere? Does that counterpart have some kind of bending-related ability? Then today is your lucky today! Gone are the days of bending (or non-bending); today, you get the powers your OU counterpart has! Alternatively, you thought you were out of the woods when everyone else had their bending messed up; not so anymore!
☯ 3. The city is in desperate need of vigilantes. Maybe. Vandals are ruining the city. Some are destroying property while others are making inappropriate graffiti on the walls and streets of the city.
☯ 4. Fresh off the boat? You know, now that all the barriers have dropped? Well you better find yourself a place to live and a place to work; otherwise you might as well make yourself home in Avatar Korra Park or ask for help on Air Temple Island.

He leads them down into the lower desks, which are all immaculately clean and decked out in blue and white carpeting and paint. Electric lights keep it lit as they go down.]
As soon as people switched from coal engines to gasoline fuels, ships were able to get a lot bigger and faster. Not to mention you're not getting coal dust everywhere! Here it is!
[The engine room is at the end of a long hallway, and just as clean and well kept as the rest of it. A single engineer is working on something, but Varrick waves him off and picks up the tools himself to finish the repair on his own.

And then I took the idea of that and made it a lot more efficient.
[Connor looks around, examining everything. The only familiarity he has with engines is the Fire Nation machinery he's sabotaged in the past, and even so, that pales in comparison to this.]
With an engine like this, you do not have to be answerable to the wind or the currents. It is like the people of your time have mastered the elements with these inventions... even without bending.
[Which seems like a very obvious observation, now that he says it out loud, but these are all incredibly new revelations to him.]
[Varrick leans back to inspect his own handy-work, hands on his hips.]
As a non-bender I had to find my own way around this stuff, you know? It's not like it used to be any more, anyone can get a job if they got the brains for it, don't matter if you got mastering over the elements or nothing.
