♥ 1. Where did you come from? You may not know anyone else on the boat, but you've all got one thing in common; you're headed to Republic City. ♥ 2. It's your first day in Republic City. You might wanna get a job lined up or you'll be living on the streets. ♥ 3. You're the new person in the city. You gotta make some friends, right? Go find someone and strike up a conversation.
♦ 4. Feeling a little crafty? Maybe you could make a quick yuan. Sell information for money or do a little threatening. ♦ 5. Vines. Vines everywhere! They're like the heads of a hydra. What are you going to do about the vines that just invaded your apartment? ♦ 6. Triads, Equalists... thugs in general. Welcome to the aftermath of losing a fight. ♣ 7. You've got a job. What is it? How are you going to get customers? You better get some soon. More customers equals more money. ♣ 8. You're a bender, right? Then you better practice it. What's that? Oh, a non-bender? You can still find a partner to spar with, right? ♣ 9. It's late. Have a drink at the pub! Get to know one another. Let it all flow freely!
♠ 10. Yeah! You've got a driver's license! Everyone else better watch out... ♠ 11. Entertainment's just rolled on into the city! Watch the ostrich-horses race or the acrobats perform. [Wan acknowledged the advice easily enough, but knowing and doing were two very different things.]
I'm trying to just move forward and do the best I can. Seeing this city, seeing everything that's happened since my time, it's a lot to take in. And it's great. It really is. But it also shows me how much more I still have to go in all my lives to come.
When I started this, I thought I could solve all the problems in my own lifetime. But it's been ten thousand years and balance is barely starting to come back to the world. There's still hope and I'm not going to give up, but...
[He sighed.]
I'll try not to dwell on it so much. Enough good things have happened. Balance will come.

There is only so much that any one person can do to resolve difficult problems. Trying to fix too many at once will often end in failure. It helps if you focus on one at a time, if possible.
[He reached up and put a comforting hand on Wan's shoulder, looking at him directly as he found an easy smile.]
But it seems you already know what you have to do while you're here. Keep moving forward, like you said, and don't ever lose hope. No matter what happens, happens for a reason. While we may be able to control some things, others are out of our hands.

Don't worry. I haven't given up hope. If I had done that, there wouldn't be an Avatar.
[His eyes flicked away, catching a spirit sneaking not only a sip, but attempting to steal the cup Iroh had set down. Wan clicked his tongue, catching the spirit's attention and it sheepishly turned around and offered the cup back to them. Wan pushed his own over in trade. Iroh was his guest, he got to keep his cup. Wan could give his up for now.]

But one thing he said had really caught his attention though. The mention of starting something had been innocuous enough, but mentioning the possibility of no Avatar? He paused a moment, considering what that could mean. Logic dictated he may have had a serious problem that would have stopped the Avatar Cycle, but what could it have been?]
There wouldn't be an Avatar if you had lost hope? What do you mean by that?
[Okay, maybe he was a little too curious right then, but he could smell a story. One that he would understand if his host shied away from telling.]

Wan cringed, dropping his head. If he said something, Iroh might mess up and mention it to someone he didn't want it mentioned to. But Iroh had also promised not to say anything and he trusted the man. Believed he would keep his promise. But back on the other side of it, if he kept talking to Iroh he would probably let it slip anyway because that's just how the conversation was going and-]
I'm the Avatar.
[Wan's head snapped up as he blurted it out.]
Not just a Avatar. The Avatar. The first one.
my kingdom for appropriate icons... but effort 8T
This is incredible... I never thought I would have such an honor in all my life. And I promise never to share this with anyone. It's your story to tell, not mine.
[Telling other peoples' stories that may not be widely known is primarily reserved for Zuko. And even those moments are far and few in between.]

[Wan's eyes saddened. He hadn't shared that so Iroh would treat him differently.]
Just... pretend I'm not. Don't treat me any differently than you would someone else. Until I can meet Korra and figure out what's going on, I'm just a regular human. Even if I'm not.

You have my word. Though I do hope you won't object to me at least treating you as I would a good friend.

[He smiled again, ducking his head.]
Thank you.

I almost forgot. If you go looking for me at the tea shop or most other places, ask for 'Mushi'. I thought it best to take a different name since I may still be known in this time. If not by my face, then my name, most certainly.
[Especially with anyone knowledgeable with the Fire Nation's royal family history or anything about the Hundred Years' War.]

[Wan's smile widened into a grin as he reached past Iroh's head to take his teacup back from a spirit that was now hovering just behind the other man.]
And if you decide to stay here, just let me know. You can have the first two floors, but I'll make a ladder for you to come up and see me whenever you'd like to.

Oh, I'd appreciate that very much, thank you. And you would be just as welcome down to visit me as well. Mula too, if she would like.

Mula thanks you for the invitation.
