[He stayed quiet as he approached, being careful not to spook the creatures. He stopped not too far and knelt down on one knee. Most of them didn't exist in Ba Sing Se, especially not in the Upper Ring. The Lower Ring on the other hand, they existed, but so much space had been fought over with the refugees that their numbers were few to none.]

I see you've made a few friends among the locals.

[Almost as one the group of animals turned their heads toward Iroh and then scattered. They were skittish at the best of times and normally wouldn't come near people. Wan watched them go before standing up in a fluid motion.]

Just a few. They get along pretty well with the spirits around here but most of the humans harass them.

[He gave a quick shrug and waved his hand to invite Iroh to follow him.]

I've set up camp in one of the buildings abandoned because of the Spirit Wilds. It's not far, but it is inside the wilds. If you'd rather not go inside, I can grab my teapot and we can have tea somewhere else.

That's too bad. The people here would do well to learn to live in harmony with their non-human neighbors.

[He waved off the suggestion about going elsewhere for tea.]

Your home is fine. The vines that form these Spirit Wilds do not bother me in the slightest.

[He liked Iroh already. Man had a good head on his shoulders.]

You're not like most humans I've met.

[Wan led the way down the street at a brisk pace. He wasn't really in a hurry, but it was already going to be dark by the time they got inside the wilds now that the sun was going down and he preferred using the natural light to firebending his own.]

You're more like me.

[To his credit, Iroh was able to keep up with Wan's pace. Even as he gave the back of his head an amused smile. What a curious young man this fellow was.]

Am I now? I must admit, I am a much different man from where I began many years ago. The things you see and experience can change you, sometimes for the better. [His nephew was a good example, for starters.]

[He said over his shoulder.]

I'm a lot different than where I started, too. I think it's been for the better. I'm trying to teach the humans I meet to live in peace with each other and with nature. And to respect the spirits. It's not exactly an easy thing, but knowing there are others out there who feel it can be done... that helps.

I would say it definitely sounds like you changed for the better. I have long-since embraced a philosophy that the barriers between the four nations are merely illusions. For too long, the people of this world allowed themselves to be divided among their nations. From what I've seen of this city, it was founded on similar beliefs. It's not just the Avatar that should be concerned with what happens with each nation. What affects one, affects the rest. Perhaps not right away, but it does eventually.

As with nature, the spirits most certainly should be treated with respect, whether they reside in the Spirit World or have physical forms in this world.

[Can he just adopt you as family, Iroh?

He slowed down so he could safely turn around and walk backwards as he listened to Iroh, a big silly grin on his face. And wow, there may even have been a bit of a tear in the corner of one eye. That's how beautiful those words were.]

He smiled back at Wan, one that seemed to lighten his face and smooth out one or two wrinkles. It looked like he had definitely found a kindred spirit in Republic City.]

It was no coincidence that we met today. It's not often I find others who share the same beliefs, much less those from other times.

You're the first human I've met who's ever said those words. Who wasn't me.

[And it made Wan feel giddy to have found someone else who felt as he did. He turned back around and jogged for a bit to make it to the part of the Spirit Wilds he'd been using as is 'entrance' to the vine choked part of that block. Wan pulled the vines to the side so Iroh could walk through in front of him.

Once they were both through he once more jogged ahead, still grinning like an idiot as he sprouted a torch over his hand, lighting up the jungle around them and the spirits that lived within. A good ten feet in, he stopped and spun slowly with his arm extended, as if showing it off to Iroh.]

Welcome to the Spirit Wilds. The last time they existed in the material plane was ten thousand years ago.

[He followed as fast as his legs would carry him, which wasn't quite a jog, since his life wasn't in danger. So Wan still had a short wait until he could catch up. Shortly after Wan lit up his hand, Iroh did the same to get a better look.

It was truly a magnificent sight, and it definitely had a familiar feeling. He stared around, eyes wide in awe. To think he would be so fortunate to see such a place that hadn't existed in--

Wan's words made him go slack-jawed.]

Ten thousand years?! Is that the time you're from?

Yeah. That's sort of why I wasn't wanting to talk about it before.

[Wan gave a sheepish grin and a light laugh.]

But it's really not that big of a deal. Twenty years, a hundred years, a thousand, or ten thousand... anyone like us who've brought from the past, it's not so much about the number of years. We all have to get used to this place and changes that have happened.

[While this isn't his first surprise here, he's more than sure meeting someone from 10,000 years ago won't be the last.]

You're absolutely right. The change in time and location may be difficult for some, but we must do our best to adapt to the situation at hand. Just like the spirits here. Though it seems their human neighbors weren't as willing.

[Iroh raised his hand for a better look at the spirits floating around overhead. Truly incredible. It was becoming quite tempting to move into one of the abandoned buildings here to live among the spirits.]

[Wan had already done just that. Living among spirits in the wilds was so much more comfortable and familiar than trying to find a place in the otherwise loud city of humans. Even back on the Lion Turtle City, he'd lived outside the walls and the crowd and in the trees. Though he had no true regret for having closed the portals (it needed to be done), he had missed living like this.

He started off through the dark jungle with confidence and the occasional wave at passing spirits. A few of them even came up to hover over one shoulder for a short distance or follow along at his side and chatter at him in odd noises that made no sense (and wasn't meant to) but got a laugh out of him anyway.]

How are you at climbing? I'm staying in a third floor room of a building that had the stairs between the second and third floors collapsed and cut off by some of the vines. The only way in is over the group of vines that tore open one of the upper level walls. It's a pretty steep climb, but I can help you up if you need it.

[Two spirits wandered up to Iroh on their hike over, running and hopping alongside him for a moment. One tiny bird-like spirit even nested in his beard for a couple minutes, crooning happily, before flitting off into the darkness.

Though he did have to consider Wan's question for a minute. Even if he was still mostly fit from his breakout on the eclipse and the battle to reclaim Ba Sing Se, he hadn't really done much climbing. Pull-ups on the overhead bars of his cage, sure, but it wouldn't be like that. It was worth trying, at least.]

Hm... I should be fine if it's not too high of a climb, but if I need help, I would be grateful to accept it.

It's only about twenty or twenty five feet.

[Wan gave his rough estimate as they closed in on his current home. A catdeer was curled up on the ground outside of the building. She lifted her head at their approach and then stood up with a languid stretch before trotting over to greet Wan.]

This is Mula. Mula, this is Iroh.

[Iroh sized it up as they approach. It looked manageable...

And then more introductions, this time with Wan's companion. A beautiful creature, but he'd wait to see if she'd come to greet him. No sense in approaching first when they were just becoming acquainted.]

Hello, Mula. It's nice to meet you.

Don't worry, Mula's friendly.

[Wan said as he gave the catdeer a good chin skritching. She purred happily and let him continue, but when he stopped, she opened her eyes back up to look over at Iroh. Sliding past Wan (and rubbing against him in a very feline manner) she got close enough to give a sniff to the old man. Apparently satisfied with what she found, she gave a loud sneeze then turned around to bound up the vines to the room that Wan had claimed.]

She likes you.

[Wan declared as he started his own, slower, climb up the vines.]

I'm glad to have her approval.

[He said it with a chuckle as he approached the vines. Resolve steeled and his tiny flame gone, he got a good grip on the vines and slowly made his way up. It would take him a bit longer than Wan to climb up, but he was determined to try and make it up on his own as far up as he could.

About eight feet from the top was where he had to pause and rest a moment. More fit he may be, but a young man he most certainly was not.]

I may have misjudged my abilities a little. Would you mind lending me a hand, Wan?

Sure.

[Wan hopped off the vine as if jumping across stepping stones. His feet caught by a cloud of air that rumbled softly into existence. He lowered himself down to where Iroh was stuck and offered his hand.]

It should hold you, but it's better if I hold onto you, too. Just to be sure.

[This was unexpected...

He released the vines with one hand to take Wan's and carefully stepped over. It was hard to see exactly what he was using to support them both, but it most certainly wasn't any sort of firebending skill. None that he was aware of ever existing. He planned on asking as soon as their feet found solid floor. But as usual, manners first for the rescue.]

[Wan held Iroh firmly as the cloud lifted them up and into the room. Once they were over the floor, it dissipated as quickly as it came, dropping the two of them quickly to solid ground. Wan's hold on Iroh remained until he was certain the old man had his footing. After that, Wan flicked his wrist a couple times, sending small bursts of fire out to light the smattering of torches he had set up in lieu of proper lanterns.

The room Wan had taken for himself was actually two small apartments that were no longer divided because of the vines going through the walls. Half of one was also completely unusable for that very same reason. There was a kitchen that was mostly okay, the door to it expanded by a torn out wall, and it was to this that Wan headed.

The 'entrance' of Wan's temporary home was the bedroom of one of the apartments. Though the bed had long since been dragged out, empty dressers and other heavy items too difficult to move safely remained.]

Go ahead and make yourself comfortable. There's a sitting area through that wall. It still has a large couch in it. Mula might already have claimed it, though.

[Yes, they were definitely flying. But there was definitely no use of fire. But he was sure Wan was a firebender, not an airbender. Curious.

Only after his feet were safely on the floor was that notion confirmed. Could he bend more than one element? But that was impossible, only one person held that sort of power... Then again, things were already pretty impossible.]

Are you sure you wouldn't like any help?

No, but thank you. I'll bring the pot out and it can brew while we talk. I just need to get some water.

[Wan said over his shoulder while he headed to the obviously broken sink. Unfortunately his body blocked whatever he did to get the water from the most-likely-not-working pipes, so confirming if it was waterbending or just his good luck that there was still pressure was not an easy thing. But it didn't take him long and he was pressing his hand to the side of the pot to heat the water when he came back to join Iroh.]

[Hmmm... Very curious. He stewed in his thoughts as he wandered into the room Wan had indicated before. As predicted, Mula had taken over the couch, but he had no inclination of getting her to relinquish any of it. He was the guest, after all. Instead, he found a spot on the floor to kneel on and settled in as Wan entered.]

You and Mula have a wonderful home here. Thank you for allowing me to intrude on your space.
